Roma, 26 marzo 2021 – Il vaccino anti-Covid è un salvavita se somministrato a pazienti oncologici che devono affrontare un intervento chirurgico. Lo dimostra uno studio pubblicato sulla rivista “British Journal of Surgery”, coordinato dall’Università di Birmingham in collaborazione con l’Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori di Milano. Lo studio COVIDSurg Collaborative, il più vasto studio mai condotto al mondo per numero di pazienti arruolati e portato a termine in tempi record, ha coinvolto 141.582 pazienti provenienti da 1.667 ospedali in 116 Paesi tra cui, oltre a Italia che ha partecipato con ben 115 centri, ci sono Regno Unito, Australia, Brasile, Cina, India, Emirati Arabi Uniti e Stati Uniti. I ricercatori hanno dimostrato che nei pazienti candidati alla chirurgia, la vaccinazione anti-Covid pre-operatoria potrebbe prevenire oltre 58 mila decessi all’anno correlati all’infezione.
“Vaccinare i pazienti candidati alla chirurgia è prioritario rispetto a vaccinare la popolazione generale, perché si tratta di pazienti più fragili per i quali contrarre il virus nel periodo perioperatorio comporta un rischio di morte molto più alto”, spiega Marco Fiore, chirurgo oncologo dell’Int e coordinatore dello studio per l’Istituto dei Tumori. Lo studio ha evidenziato che tra i pazienti candidati a chirurgia, la popolazione che in particolare ne trarrebbe maggior vantaggio è proprio quella dei malati oncologici. “A parità di dosi somministrate, infatti, vaccinare gli oncologici candidati a chirurgia può prevenire da 11 a 131 volte più decessi per Covid 19, rispetto alla vaccinazione della popolazione generale di pari età”. I pazienti oncologici, infatti, hanno un rischio fino a 3,5 volte maggiore rispetto alla popolazione sana di ammalarsi di Covid e di sviluppare forme più severe. Da qui, conclude Alessandro Gronchi, responsabile del Servizio di Chirurgia dei Sarcomi dell’Int e presidente della Società Italiana Chirurgia Oncologica (Sico), “la necessità di una rete per la gestione del malato chirurgico oncologico durante e dopo l’emergenza, che in questa fase preveda anche la vaccinazione anti-Covid.
