Roma, 10 luglio 2020 – Secondo uno studio dell’Università di Waikato in Nuova Zelanda e pubblicato sulla rivista Accident Analysis and Prevention il cosiddetto back seat driver, ovvero il passeggero che dà consigli non richiesti al guidatore e che viene comunemente considerato un elemento di disturbo, dimostra invece di poter contribuire a ridurre il rischio di incidenti perché rende chi è al volante meno spericolato e irritabile e più tollerante. L’indagine è stata condotta su 600 automobilisti di età superiore ai 25 anni che nell’ultimo mese hanno guidato in compagnia di uno o più passeggeri perché il rischio di incidenti per i guidatori più giovani risulta di quattro o cinque volte superiore quando hanno come passeggeri altri giovani. Le osservazioni più gradite dai conducenti sono gli avvertimenti della presenza di polizia oppure sulla presenza di cani, gatti o altro che possono essere molto pericolosi e causare anche gravi incidenti. Sono molto apprezzati i passeggeri che guardano la strada e si assicurano che tutto sia sicuro agli incroci e restano in silenzio durante una complicata manovra di parcheggio. Molti guidatori dichiarano invece di essere infastiditi da critiche sullo stile di guida e dà consigli non richiesti. Generalmente ben accetto è invece chi scarta del cibo, passa oggetti complicati da raggiungere, legge mappe oppure risponde al cellulare. Gli autori della ricerca, i docenti di psicologia Samuel Charlton e Nicola Starkley, osservano che gli studi precedenti si sono concentrati sul back seat driver come elemento di disturbo e distrazione per il guidatore mentre si tratta di uno stereotipo che viene dalle caricature di film e programmi televisivi di passeggeri ansiosi e pedanti.
