Lo studio, pubblicato su Science Advances, ha cercato di capire perché i neuroblastomi varino di gravità, con alcuni più facili da trattare e altri che invece sono più complessi e hanno tassi di sopravvivenza, a cinque anni, relativamente bassi. Il neuroblastoma è un raro cancro che colpisce generalmente i bimbi sotto i cinque anni e che vede suo inizio nell’addome (solitamente nelle ghiandole surrenali). I ricercatori hanno analizzato l’espressione genica di 19.723 cellule tumorali e le hanno confrontate con 57.972 cellule surrenali dello sviluppo. “Ciò che più colpisce dei nostri risultati è che, nonostante la grande diversità del comportamento clinico del neuroblastoma, esiste una cellula-tipo di neuroblastoma globale che si trova in tutti i pazienti. L’identificazione dei simpaticoblasti come radice di tutti i neuroblastomi è un passo importante verso la comprensione di come si sviluppa la malattia e, si spera, anche di come possiamo trattarla”, spiega Jan Molenaar, autore senior dello studio. Per Karin Straathof, altra autrice senior della ricerca, “il neuroblastoma è un cancro insolito in quanto alcuni tumori si risolvono senza intervento, ma la malattia ha ancora uno dei tassi di sopravvivenza a cinque anni più bassi di qualsiasi altro cancro infantile”.
