Roma, 5 gennaio 2021 – La Giornata Mondiale dell’alfabeto Braille si celebra, ogni anno, il 4 gennaio: la data scelta, tutt’altro che casuale, coincide con quella di nascita di Luis Braille.
Luis Braille, l’inventore dell’alfabeto che permette ai non vedenti di leggere e scrivere, nacque in Francia e all’età di tre anni diventò accidentalmente cieco: nonostante questo, però, la sua voglia di imparare a leggere e scrivere non è mai venuta a mancare; così, a 15 anni, cominciò a sviluppare un sistema di simboli composta da puntini, in rilievo, sulla carta.
I puntini, facilmente percepibili con le mani, in questo modo rendono possibile la lettura e la scrittura alle persone cieche o ipovedenti
L’Unione Italiana Ciechi e Ipovedenti, l’organizzazione nazionale che rappresenta le istanze di circa 2 milioni di cittadini ciechi assoluti e ipovedenti, in occasione di questa importante ricorrenza richiama l’attenzione sullo stato di emergenza in cui versano le persone con disabilità visiva nel corso della pandemia da covi 19, chiedendo massima attenzione e impegno alle Istituzioni del Paese. I disabili visivi – commenta Mario Barbuto, presidente dell’Unione Italiana Ciechi e Ipovedenti – sono tra le persone più esposte al rischio di contagio. Così. Pensiamo infatti che per un cieco o un ipovedente il tatto è il principale veicolo di esplorazione e interazione con il mondo esterno, ed essenziale per muoversi nello spazio, studiare a distanza, lavorare, acquistare beni di necessità, evitare pericoli, come dimostra anche l’adozione ormai universale del sistema Braille basato appunto su punti in rilievo percepibili solo al tatto. Ne consegue che sono proprio i ciechi tra i soggetti più esposti al rischio virus e che necessitano di priorità e attenzione particolare in questa fase di programmazione degli accessi alla vaccinazione.
