Roma, 23 giugno 2021 – Si celebra oggi la Giornata Internazionale delle Vedove istituita dalle Nazioni Unite per sollecitare i Paesi a garantire i diritti di questa fetta della popolazione mondiale pari a circa 250 milioni di donne di cui una su dieci vive in estrema povertà. In Paesi come la Repubblica Democratica del Congo le donne che hanno perso il proprio marito a causa dei conflitti e delle violenze rappresentano il 50%, ma anche l’Iraq conta tre milioni di vedove e solamente a Kabul, in Afghanistan, se ne calcolano 70mila. In alcuni paesi la vedovanza è considerata uno status molto basso e in particolare in Asia e in Africa la perdita del proprio marito pone le donne a rischio di violenza fisica e mentale per problemi legati alla successione di proprietà e terre. Le donne possono essere scacciate anche dai propri familiari e si vedono negare il proprio diritto anche all’alloggio. In alcuni Pasi esiste l’orribile tradizione di far bere loro l’acqua con cui è stato lavato il marito morto, possono essere costrette a rasare i capelli oppure ad avere interazioni sessuali con i familiari del marito. Devono provvedere da sole al mantenimento e alla crescita dei figli in luoghi che non conoscono o addirittura in un campo profughi. In alcuni casi possono essere tenute a rimborsare i debiti del marito e ciò le costringe spesso all’accattonaggio, se non alla prostituzione. Attraverso l’istituzione della Giornata, si vuole sensibilizzare il mondo sui problemi e le difficoltà a cui vanno incontro queste donne e garantire il rispetto dei loro diritti. Tra le azioni messe in campo è prevista la possibilità di ricevere le informazioni necessarie sull’accesso a una quota equa del loro patrimonio, della loro terra e delle loro risorse produttive, una pensione e una protezione sociale che non si basa esclusivamente sullo stato civile, un lavoro dignitoso e parità di retribuzione, opportunità di istruzione e formazione. Secondo l’ONU, consentire alle vedove di sostenere se stesse e le loro famiglie contribuisce a combattere lo stigma sociale, che porta alla loro esclusione e alle pratiche discriminatorie e dannose a cui sono sottoposte.
