18 novembre 2020 – Con più vaccini, screening e trattamenti è possibile eliminare i tumori della cervice uterina, la quarta causa di cancro nelle donne, riducendo i nuovi casi del 40% e risparmiando 5 milioni di morti entro il 2050. Lo afferma la nuova strategia lanciata dall’assemblea mondiale dell’Oms, secondo cui per ogni dollaro investito nello sforzo le economie ne guadagnerebbero 3,2.
Gli obiettivi indicati dal piano prevedono di avere entro il 2030 il 90% delle donne sopra i 15 anni completamente vaccinate contro l’Hpv, il virus che causa la maggior parte di questi tumori, il 70% sottoposte a screening a 35 e 45 anni e il 90% delle donne a cui viene diagnosticato il tumore che ricevono il trattamento. Il ritorno economico, afferma il documento, sale a 26 dollari se si considerano anche i benefici indiretti sulle famiglie e sulle comunità.
“Eliminare una qualsiasi forma di tumore una volta sembrava un sogno impossibile – afferma il direttore generale dell’Oms Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus – ma ora abbiamo gli strumenti efficaci e basati sull’evidenza per renderlo una realtà. Ma possiamo eliminare il tumore cervicale come problema di salute pubblica se riusciamo a unire gli strumenti che abbiamo con una forte determinazione ad usarli in tutto il mondo”.
Secondo le ultime cifre dell’Oms nel 2018 ci sono stati nel mondo 570mila nuovi casi e 311mila morti. La cifra, in assenza di interventi, salirà a 700mila casi e 400mila morti entro il 2030.
