Il suo impegno per la legalità, per esempio, come quello a favore dei migranti, si intrecciano frequentemente nei piani narrativi del commissario.
“Un addio commosso e sincero a un grande rappresentante della cultura e della storia del nostro Paese – è il commento accorato per la morte dello scrittore Andrea Camilleri del Presidente dell’ANMIL, Zoello Forni – che, in più occasioni, ha parlato nei suoi racconti dei temi della disabilità e del mondo del lavoro come gli infortuni che sono stati ispirazione di romanzi di fantasia ma estremamente realistici. Nella sua opera il tema della disabilità e del lavoro ricorre più volte. Disabile lui stesso, a causa della quasi totale cecità che lo ha afflitto per tanti anni, ha addirittura ricevuto un riconoscimento pubblico da parte dell’Unione italiana dei Ciechi e degli Ipovedenti. Il “Premio Braille alla carriera” gli è stato consegnato il 3 dicembre del 2018, nell’ambito della Giornata Internazionale delle Persone con Disabilità. L’UICI destina questo premio a persone e istituzioni che si sono distinte nel contribuire al miglioramento delle condizioni di vita, lavoro e studio dei ciechi e degli ipovedenti italiani. Camilleri, poi, ha donato diversi esemplari dei suoi romanzi a favore della raccolta fondi UICI a supporto delle numerose attività.
Il grande scrittore siciliano è tra gli autori di “Articolo 1”, l’antologia pubblicata da Sellerio qualche anno fa che racconta, senza retorica e stereotipi, storie di ordinaria quotidianità nel mondo del lavoro: disoccupazione, precarietà, vita di fabbrica, pubblico impiego. Lo scrittore narra la vicenda di Tano Cumbo, operaio “cinquantino”, improvvisamente disoccupato in seguito alla più o meno improvvisa chiusura della fabbrica di mattonelle nella quale ha lavorato per trenta anni, rara oasi di lavoro stabile e regolare in un contesto di occupazione scarsa e precaria. Il dramma dell’uomo e i suoi risvolti sociali e psicologici, come accade anche in altri racconti dell’antologia, non diventa mai tragedia, ma tutti i piccoli episodi che seguono il grande “evento” del licenziamento restano sempre sul crinale di una quotidiana e dolorosa normalità, a cui i protagonisti riescono a restare aggrappati con sapiente grazia e mesta ponderatezza.
Insieme all’ANFP (funzionari di polizia), la Fondazione Camilleri, infine, ha tra i suoi obiettivi il sostegno ai giovani orfani di appartenenti alle forze di polizia, oppure i figli di coloro che sono portatori di inabilità o invalidità gravi e permanenti per cause di servizio.
