Il docente universitario, da una vita al fianco dei suoi studenti, dice che la prima sfida è tornare al dialogo
Antropologo della comunicazione. Questo è Massimo Canevacci. Lui precisa però che il suo mestiere è insegnare “Antropologia culturale” alla Sapienza di Roma, in cui l’aspetto della comunicazione è centrale, ma non il solo. È quasi impossibile ripercorrere l’elenco di tutto ciò che ha scritto per documentare anni di studio, che spaziano dall’evoluzione dei processi produttivi al rapporto fra le generazioni. Un aspetto, quest’ultimo, in cui ha messo in discussione se stesso, sperimentando in prima persona teorie e fatti. Lo raggiungo, quando ha ormai la valigia in mano, prima della partenza per il Brasile, dove insegna da oltre trent’anni in più di un ateneo. Parliamo per quasi due ore e non è semplice contenerle in dieci domande. Ci provo, ma è soltanto un assaggio di quanto ho ascoltato.
– I giovani e la comunicazione. In che modo i nuovi linguaggi possono catturare i loro interessi?
Sono stato particolarmente fortunato perché ho iniziato ad avere un rapporto diretto con i miei studenti a partire dall’inizio degli anni 90, quando insegnavo alla Facoltà di Sociologia. In quel periodo molti dei miei ragazzi partecipavano alla rivoluzione digitale al Forte Prenestino di Roma. Io non capivo nulla di informatica e così ho incominciato a partecipare ai loro dibattiti nei centri sociali, instaurando un rapporto di amicizia e di scambio. Affrontare la trasformazione dei giovani, in quegli anni, fu un processo di antropologia spontanea e non basato su un metodo di ricerca. Imparare ad ascoltare un ragazzo è una delle cose più difficili. Si pensa solitamente che un giovane debba ascoltare l’adulto e conformarsi, ma non è così. Il mio metodo è quello della dialogica, dell’arte dell’ascoltare e di ascoltarsi perché l’antropologia deve sviluppare una riflessione prima di tutto all’interno di se stessi. E questo significa che tu non sei solo un osservatore oggettivo dei giovani, ma fai parte delle loro esperienze, senza dare giudizi, anche quando si tratta di esperienze estreme. Voglio portare come esempio quello dei “rave”, nelle aree dismesse, a cui ho voluto partecipare per cercare innanzitutto di capire e al tempo stesso di contenere i danni, fino a dove è stato possibile. Perché è proprio qui che è finita la mia ricerca etnografica sul campo. Oggi i codici sono cambiati e preferisco osservare un silenzio discreto. Resta il fatto che, per dialogare con i giovani, bisogna rimettersi in moto ed entrare nella relazione con loro.
– Nell’era di Facebook, come i giovani possono entrare nel mondo del lavoro e con quali valori?
Va premesso che le profonde trasformazioni del mondo del lavoro implicano che un giovane di oggi, rispetto a quello di vent’anni fa, deve avere una formazione totalmente nuova perché il lavoro connesso con la tecnologia digitale è in costante evoluzione. A questo proposito, in Italia si registrano ritardi perché i giovani non sono ancora consapevoli che devono continuare a formarsi per tutta la vita. Le innovazioni sono enormi e il lavoro non è più un modello stabile che ti accompagnerà per tutta la vita. Difficilmente – e questa è una considerazione amara – un giovane farà sempre la stessa cosa. Sarà pertanto complicato transitare nel mondo del lavoro avendo gli stessi diritti nel tempo. Sarebbe dunque il caso di dire “Corri lentamente” e di ripensare a come incrociare la lentezza della riflessione con la velocità delle nuove tecnologie.
– Come vengono percepiti dai giovani alcuni temi, come per esempio le barriere architettoniche per i disabili?
Io vivo fra l’Italia e il Brasile, dove l’attenzione dei giovani per i portatori di handicap è molto alta. Ritengo invece che nel nostro Paese, sul piano della solidarietà, dovrebbe essere fatto un lavoro più approfondito. Troppo spesso assistiamo a comportamenti che umiliano il diverso. E qui la responsabilità è innanzitutto della famiglia e della comunicazione. I genitori spesso hanno difficoltà a dialogare con i figli e non si accorgono di avere trasmesso valori regressivi che mettono l’uno contro l’altro. È scomparsa persino la vergogna. Ho fatto una ricerca, per alcuni mesi, su alcuni giornali on line e ho raccolto aggressioni continue, che non possono che influenzare i giovani. Le tecnologie digitali, da una forma di modello di liberazione per lo più orizzontale, si stanno trasformando in un modello di violenza autoritaria, senza controllo. Oltre alla famiglia, spetterebbe anche alla scuola e all’università colmare queste lacune.
– Nella comunicazione, si è perso il rapporto diretto, soprattutto quando il piano sociale diventa virtuale e si trasforma in una sorta di videogame. Quanto è importante tornare alla relazione?
È proprio questa la grande sfida.
– Tra i diritti negati, ce ne sono alcuni – come quello del sesso per i disabili – che rappresentano ancora un tabù. È possibile che esistano a tutt’oggi queste zone d’ombra?
La diversità continua a spaventare. Ritengo che la sessualità sia una specie di chiave di lettura di una forma di condivisione democratica. Se è ignorata o repressa, significa che non viene vista come una questione che ti riguarda in modo diretto, ma come un problema dell’altro, sia che si parli di una esigenza sessuale in senso stretto, sia che si pensi ad una richiesta di affetto su un piano più ampio.
– Quanto è importante lo Storytelling per trasmettere messaggi ai giovani?
Qui tocchiamo un tasto bellissimo. Ho appreso l’arte del raccontare quando insegnavo agli universitari al Cinema Europa di Roma e avevo davanti più di 1000 studenti. Non potevo fare una lezione classica e ho dovuto inventare forme narrative diverse, dal movimento del corpo alla creazione di immagini, per catturare l’attenzione. Lo Storytelling è un’arte del parlare e dell’ascoltare, dove si creano dei flussi dell’esperienza. Un tempo i genitori sapevano narrare ai propri figli le storie che non erano scritte sui libri. Io sono a favore di un umanesimo in cui il soggetto non sia soltanto l’essere umano, ma anche tutto ciò che lo circonda, come la natura. Occorre una trasformazione antropologica che non metta al centro l’uomo, ma tutto ciò che è vitale.
– Ci parli del suo ultimo libro: “Antropologia della comunicazione visuale”, un saggio edito da Post Media Book, alle fine dello scorso anno.
La comunicazione visuale sta diventando il centro delle relazioni, non solo fra esseri umani, ma – come dicevo – fra tutto ciò che è vitale. Ho cercato di mettere a fuoco pubblicità, film, fumetti, design, opere di artiste e artisti, tutte forme espressive tra le quali ho cercato di capire il punto di unione. Ho inoltre ripercorso la ricerca di tre registi: David Kronenberg, Pier Paolo Pasolini e David Lynch. La conclusione è il senso di ubiquità del soggetto digitale, che può essere simultaneamente in tempi e spazi diversi. Questo è il problema antropologico che mi interessa di più e che ho cercato di affrontare in questo libro. C’è poi un mio romanzo – che è appena uscito – “Caccia funebre”, che parla dell’assassinio di un professore della Facoltà di Scienza della Comunicazione. Sì, perché l’Università uccide i suoi professori. Accade anche nella società italiana che, invece di favorire la crescita culturale, ammazza le sue figure più innovative. C’è un assassino dentro l’Università?
– Lei sta partendo per il Brasile dove insegna in varie Università. C’è qualcosa che, nel mondo del lavoro, l’Italia può esportare negli altri paesi?
Una mia idea, a cui tengo molto, è quella della bottega digitale. L’esperienza italiana nel Rinascimento era quella del maestro che aveva a bottega i suoi studenti. Oggi la bottega digitale unisce l’artista e l’artigiano e questa dovrebbe diventare la sfida per affrontare il nuovo Rinascimento italiano: il lavoro di artisti e artigiani che conoscono i processi digitali. Dobbiamo unire di nuovo le scienze esatte e le scienze umane. Questa è la prospettiva del mondo digitale in cui l’Italia dovrebbe essere leadership.
– Nell’era dei social, dove il selfie rappresenta un “io” esasperato, come possiamo cambiare la prospettiva dei giovani per far emergere la dimensione dell’essere e non dell’apparire?
L’umanesimo rinascimentale, di cui ho parlato, va applicato al contesto attuale, al saper inventare. L’artefice deve essere artista e artigiano al tempo stesso perché il concetto di arte va inteso in senso espanso. Per quanto riguarda il selfie, l’autoscatto di per sè non basta se non si recupera questa dimensione. E chi scrive, chi insegna, ha proprio questo compito.
– Per concludere, per lei “Globalizzazione” è?
Non è globalizzazione, ma glocalizzazione, un misto di globale e locale.
